Gurubashi Arena
If you’ve ever quested in Stranglethorn Vale, you’ve probably seen this:
Arrr, Me Hearties! I be havin’ some extra Treasure that I be givin’ away at the Gurubashi Arena! All ye need do to collect it is open the chest I leave on the arena floor!
I’d seen this off and on as I quested on different characters in STV but I’d never really paid it much attention. Every now and then I’d see some people grouping at the Arena, and occasionally I would ask them what the deal was but I never really got a good explanation on it. Eventually, each character I was leveling would move on from STV and I’d never really think about it again.
This time around though, when I was leveling Adrenis through STV, it seemed that I saw that message constantly, and every time I’d run past the Arena there’d be a group of people there. So I finally got curious as to what the deal was.
So tell me how it works then.
Every three hours (12, 3, 6, and 9 am/pm server time), an NPC named Short John Mithril drops a chest in the middle of the Gurubashi Arena. The pit of the Arena is a Free-For-All PvP zone, which means that as soon as you hit the ground you can attack (and be attacked by) anyone, regardless of faction. The only exception is the people in your group, so you can’t accidentally harm them with friendly fire.
Hmm, so what’s in the chest?
I’m glad you asked that… The main item from the chest (and the only item guaranteed to be in there) is the Arena Master trinket, which starts a quest, appropriately named Arena Master. Completing the quest involves talking to Short John Mithril, who resides in the back of the Arena. He tells you to bring him 12 Arena Master trinkets and he will give you the Arena Grandmaster trinket!
Other items in the chest may include healing and mana potions and there are several pieces of BoE armor that can only be obtained from the chest:
Arena Wristguards Rare Cloth Bracers
Arena Bracers Rare Leather Bracers
Arena Bands Rare Mail Bracers
Arena Vambraces Rare Plate Bracers
Any strategies on how to get the chest?
The chest is unfortunately often difficult to get. STV is a popular zone for both Alliance and Horde and there are usually a good number of people trying to get it. Additionally, there are oftentimes a few high level peeps that will come join the party just for the fun of it (especially on PvP servers). If you intend on getting the chest, plan on trying a few times before it finally works out. If you want the Arena Grandmaster trinket, then plan on trying many many times. Here are some strategies that will help you out.
The first strategy is the most straightforward, and that is to get a couple of guildies/friends/or random people and work together. Once you’ve eliminated all of the competition, you can duel each other, roll for the chest, take turns, braid each other’s hair or whatever. Don’t take too long dueling though, because the people that you just killed will be running back for their bodies and might rez at an inopportune time. Also, make sure that you can trust the people that you’re teamed up with. An unscrupulous person might wait till the end and then stab you in the back (possibly literally… heh heh).
If you can’t find anyone to go with you, then try this. Hide a short distance from the Arena when the time is drawing near. Hanging out in or in front of the Arena is just asking to be ganked. When you hear Short John yell, mount up (if possible) and run into the arena. You have about one minute from the time he yells until the chest spawns. With a little bit of luck you might be able to sneak in unnoticed and get the chest quickly.
The next strategy is to head to the Arena at off-hours. Try going there at midnight, 3 and 6 am and see if the crowd is somewhat thinner. This will mess up your sleep schedule… but tough it out. And besides, if you’re in college, what else are you gonna do? Go to class? Psssshhhhh. Another good time to check it out is immediately following maintenance on Tuesdays. As soon as the server comes online, Short John will go and drop the chest. If you’re quick (and perhaps you /camped in the Arena the night before) you could possibly get the chest without any trouble.
The last strategy will only work on new or fairly new servers but could potentially get you the chest and/or trinket more quickly than the other strategies. When a new server opens, make the character you want the trinket on, and then run down to the Arena without leveling any at all. You will die a number of times on your way to the Arena but you can get there eventually. The idea here is that on a new server there will not be any people high enough to quest in STV yet and so the competition for the chest will be greatly reduced (and perhaps even non-existent). Just camp in the Arena and log in at the appropriate times and loot the chest.
Thank you so much for those awesome strategies!
You’re very welcome.
Anything else?
No, I think that about covers it.
