What To Bring To A Guild

Since writing yesterday on what I’m looking for in a guild, I’ve been thinking about the flip side of that concept. As with any relationship, you have to give as well as take in order for things to work out. Here are a few ideas on what I think you should bring to a guild.

1) When you’re looking for a guild, do some research and find one that fits you well. Your realm forums are a great place to start. There is usually a thread that lists all of the guilds and their contacts for both factions. You can also sometimes find threads from guilds that are actively recruiting.

When you’re looking for a guild, try to have an idea of what kind of guild you want. If you’re not to 70 yet, then you’re probably looking for a laid back, family type guild, where you can make friends, have people to group with and level and quest at your leisure. If you’ve hit the level cap and want to raid some or if you’re serious about the Arena and PvP then look for one of those guilds.

Another thing to consider is your play schedule. If you often play at a certain time, find a guild that has members that play at similar times. I remember back on my old server there was a guild that was made up of players from Oceania. They started their raids at 1 am est. If they can work that out, anyone can.

2) Be an active, friendly player. Everyone’s schedule’s are different and not everyone has the same amount of time to play WoW, but if you want to help your guild succeed, being online frequently is an important step. Also, talk in guild chat. Funny stories are always welcome.

3) Help others. There are few things more frustrating than wanting to get a quest done or run a dungeon and being unable to find anyone to help you. When guildies ask for assistance, help them out if you can. This will go a long way to fostering good feelings in your guild and other people will be more willing to help you out in the future.

4) Be mature. Two things to remember here: 1) This is only a video game. 2) There are real people playing the other characters on your screen. Behave accordingly 8)

5) No begging. I’m not talking about asking for help on a quest or something, I’m talking about begging your guild for gold. Do not ever do this. Ever. Do you need me to put it in bold? Never Ever! Almost nothing will get you ignored or kicked from the guild as quickly as this will. If you need gold, go farm it like the rest of us do.

6) If they have a website, sign up for it and be active on the forums. This will give you a chance to get to know your guildies better and provides a better place to give and receive advice than in-game chat.

7) Do not stir up drama. If you are wronged accidentally by someone in the guild, be a man (or woman) about it and get it over it. If it is an egregious fault (like say, a guildie deliberately ninjas loot on a run), then quietly let the Guild Leader or an officer know about the situation. There’s no need to make a scene in guild chat.

Anything to add? I’d love to hear your thoughts on this. Especially any guild leaders or officers that may be out there.
