Leaving Your Guild
Kevin, over at The Server Is Down, posted a great article titled 10 Ways Players Leave Guilds. Having just gone through a recent guild search (which happily has ended!), I enjoyed his take on the main ways that players leave guilds. Here are my thoughts on some of the ones on his list.
1. Going AWOL - This probably happens more often that people realize - you’re only going to notice it when a prominent guild member hasn’t logged on in a while. This happened back in my old guild HoP. The hunter officer, who had been a very active player, suddenly dropped off the face of the Earth. I noticed after about 3 weeks that I hadn’t seem him on in while and when I quit WoW, about 4 months later, still had not seen him online. Did he reroll a new toon? Did he get tired of WoW and quit? Who knows… Here’s hoping he’s doing OK. *raises glass*
2. Taking a Break and 4. Graceful Exit - I left HoP when I quit WoW via a combination of these two. I posted a nice message on the guild forums saying I was leaving, sold all my stuff, gave some money away to friends, shook hands, had a going away party, got a gold retirement watch, patted people on the back, kissed some babies, gave my blessings, and then left with good feelings all around.
6. Getting Kicked Out and 8. The Angry /gquit - These two are always fun to watch happen. It usually starts with someone ranting about something in guild chat and going past the line of rational discussion. At a certain point it becomes obvious that they are not going to be in the guild much longer, but the question is are they going to be kicked before they can finish ranting or will they decide to do the /gquit themselves. I always picture the guild leader with his finger on the /gkick button thinking, “OK, if he calls me one more name he’s outta here right now!” I’ve seen some people leave over some pretty silly things. I think the discussion of hip hop music (and whether it is better or worse than rock music) that lead to an Angry /gquit takes the cake.
7. Identity Crisis - This happened back in my first guild ever. The guild leader, who was a girl, and the first officer, who was a guy, were dating in real life. The fact that they had never met in person did little to dampen the flames of their love. They were always off questing together, and anytime I was around them they would constantly do /kiss, /hug and /smile emotes at each other. They even went so far as to have an in-game wedding for their characters (in SM Cathedral, I believe). After about a year of this going on, the first officer found out that the guild leader was actually a guy that had been tricking him this whole time. Wow, the sparks flew on that one =) I almost hate to make fun of the situation because the officer was actually pretty crushed, but it was kind of amusing to watch happen.
