Get a Ravager Pet for Your Lowbie Hunter
Ravagers are an awesome looking new animal species that came with the Burning Crusade. Native to the Outlands, they are most commonly found in the hills of Hellfire Peninsula and Blade’s Edge Mountains. Recently, they were inadvertently introduced into the wildlife of Azeroth by the Draenei, who had several specimens on board the Exodar. When the ship crashed, many of these ravagers survived and managed to escape. They are now thriving in the wilds of Azuremyst and Bloodmyst Isles.

If you’re Horde, (and why in the world would you not be???), it’s going to be somewhat difficult to get one. A bit of planning will be needed and you can expect some long walks, but it’s definitely doable. If you’re Alliance, then things are a bit simpler for you, but I expect that this guide will still help you out. Our eventual destination for both sides will be the Azuremyst and Bloodmyst Isles, also known as the Draenei starting zone.
If you want to rush right over at level 10, you can, as there are level 10 ravagers just waiting to be tamed. However, your selection will be drastically limited and you’ll have a very tough time getting there and surviving the taming. I recommend waiting a bit and doing it at level 20. At that point you’ll have Aspect of the Cheetah, handy for those long runs, and Ice Trap, which will help with the taming.
Preparation
1. Stable your current pet. You can’t tame another pet while you have one out. Just dismissing it once you’re there won’t count either (you would have to completely abandon it).
2. Grab a few pieces of meat. Ravagers only eat meat (not fish) and you’ll want to have a few pieces on hand to feed him as soon as you tame him. I recommend the Haunch of Meat sold by your favorite innkeeper or meat vendor. Be careful not to get anything that is too high level for your new pet to eat. The ravagers you’ll be seeing are levels 10 to 18.
Journey
Now that you’re all set to go, head over to the Crossroads in the Barrens. The first major waypoint on our journey is Auberdine in Darkshore, so if you’re familiar with the territory already, feel free to head on up there. I’ll meet you back here in a few paragraphs. Otherwise, once you’re in the Crossroads, head north into Ashenvale.
I’ve detailed the important parts of Ashenvale here in the screenshot. 1 is the entrance from the Barrens. As you’re coming up north, take a short detour to Spintertree Post (2) to grab the flight point. Then head west across the zone towards the Zoram’gar Outpost (4), making sure to avoid Astranaar (3) along the way. The easiest way to get around it is to jump into the lake to the south and swim across. Once you’re at the other side of the lake then hop out onto the road again. And be careful here - if you’re level 20, the Alliance guards in Astranaar will aggro from a long ways away. I grabbed the screenshot below, took one more step forward and they saw me and started running to get me.
Once you’re at the Zoram’gar Outpost, grab the flight point there and then start heading north into Darkshore. You can make your way back to the main road and follow it north, or you can just follow the trail that you’re on and it will lead you into Darkshore as well. Your goal is to reach Auberdine.
One important thing to note about Darkshore is that it is Alliance-controlled, not contested like Ashenvale. If you’re on a PvP server, you’ll be flagged and the Alliance players will not be. Good times
Once you’re getting near Auberdine, stop before you actually reach the town. You’re about to run into an Alliance town at level 20. You will definitely die here and possibly multiple times. I recommend you get naked.
That’s right, baby. It’s sexy time!

I just noticed that my orc has pink toenails. Should I be worried about how he’s spending his free time?
Auberdine
In Auberdine, you need to make it to the inn on the west part of the town. The best way to get there is to head west into the woods a little ways, and then north into town. If you’re coming in at the right spot, you’ll see a big wooden platform where the gryphon master is. The inn is the building just to the right of that platform. Head in there, and then run up the ramp that leads out the back to the docks.
Once you’re out of the inn, you’ll notice that the dock splits into three branches. You want the middle one, which will take you to Azuremyst Isle. (Just so you know, the left dock takes you to the Wetlands, and the right one takes you to Teldrassil.) There’s only one guard patrol on the docks and none on the boat, so it shouldn’t take you too long to get to safety. I died twice trying to make it to the boat, once in the inn and once on the docks. Your mileage may vary.
Azuremyst Isle
The boat will dock on the west side of Azuremyst Isle. You need to make it over to the northeastern part of the island, just to the west of Emberglade in the screenshot. The specific place is called the Menagerie Wreckage and the coordinates are around 54,15. I’ve labeled it 1 in the screenshot. Be careful as you’re heading across to not get too close to the Exodar. Even on PvE servers getting too close to it will flag you for PvP, as this would constitute entering an enemy capital. If you’re worried about that, I’d stay a little ways south of the road until you are past the Exodar. Also, keep an eye out for Azure Watch (2) as it’s full of mean Alliance guards. You can skirt it to the north easily.
The ravagers you’ll find at the Wreckage are around level 10 to 12 and have orange and red coloring.
If those ravagers don’t float your boat, then head on up to Bloodmyst Isle for more selection.
Bloodmyst Isle
There are two areas with ravagers here on this island. There are more ravagers around levels 10 to 12 at the Lost Fold (1 in the screenshot) and they look like this:
The other ravagers are found north and west of Nazzivian (2 in the screenshot) and are levels 16 to 18. They have a brighter green coloring than the ravagers at the Lost Fold and look like this:
In that last screenshot, the green ravager looks bigger than my orange one, but all of them will shrink to the same size once you tame them.
The Taming
Once you’ve chosen which ravager you want to keep, it’s time to tame him! Remember how I said that Ice Trap will come in handy? The ravagers have a special move, appropriately called Ravage, that will interrupt spell casting. So, when you’re taming him, put down an Ice Trap first. That way he’ll be frozen through much of the taming and is less likely to interrupt the spell. If you’re still having trouble even with the Ice Trap, try pulling your ravager into your trap with Concussive shot (followed immediately by Tame Beast). This way you’ll have even more time before he gets to you to finish up the training.
Here’s the little guy I ended up keeping. /Hug

Now all I need is a name for him. Any suggestions?

Fluffers, or maybe cedric, personaly i think he looks liek a tama-chan to me
Okay, the next step is to tell a newbie Alliance hunter how to get a Lynx for a pet.
Yes I did it. Best method I found was to start at Menethil harbor (or if a Dwarf, just run from IF), and stripping down and stashing EVERYTHING in the bank (you have to use a Spirit Healer, it’ll prevent you from getting the big item damage hit), and die along the way. Yes, you need to run this as a ghost, because you have to go north over the Thandol Span and into the Arathi Highlands. If the spiders and raptors there don’t kill you, cut through Hillsbrad and skirt past Tauren Mill. Next is the hard part. You gotta run through Eastern and Western Plaguelands. If you weren’t a ghost before, you will be here. Just stay a ghost and run through the portal into the Belf Ghostlands (You HAVE to go through the portal. Swim around and you’ll get the pre-BC land layout. Ghostlands and Belf country doesn’t exist).
Also the portal serves another purpose. By going through it, you have made sure that when you rez at a graveyard, you’ll rez >THERE< instead of the closest “safe” graveyard. When I did it, I rezzed in the one by Tranquillien. Head north along the road but be careful of patrols. You might think about doing this part nude, if you didn’t strip down and stash at the bank before starting.
Now decide which type you want. The rare ones are north. More well trained ones are right near where you rezzed. You need to get into Quel’tha… Quel’then… Belf territory before finding yerself a lynx if you want the rare “red” lynxes, and they are ONLY found there. The ones in the Ghostlands are better trained, but are the more common orange color.
Anyway, that’s my 2 cents worth/expansion to your bit there as a newbie hunter. (Sadly my Alliance hunter I didn’t keep playing, my orc hunter and her boar have lasted to their 30’s at this point)

That’s a great guide, Polecat. I haven’t had a lowbie Ally Hunter in quite some time, but having a red or orange lynx would definitely set you apart from the other Hunters you come across.
As far as the graveyards and rezzing go, there are a couple of ways to go about rezzing at the graveyard of your choice. Essentially, anytime you change game servers, you will rez at your current graveyard, rather than being ported back to the one where you died. So hopping on the boat or zep to the other continent will work, or as you mentioned, heading through the portal to the Ghostlands.
I have also heard that logging in and out will let you rez at the current GY as well, in case you don’t have time/can’t get to the other continent.
Thanks. Now for the tough one. Getting the low level hoardie a pet OWL!! The only place they spawn before the late 40’s is in Night Elf starting territory… and the only way I can figure out how to get there is to literally run through Darnassus.
Not that the bird types are all that great before Screech. I picked up a vulture with my hunter to try out screech (I still gotta name him. I was gonna name him Hitchcock, but those last 4 letters means the name was blocked by Blizz) and holy hell is it effective! I’ll be upgrading to an owl as soon as I can, but shut off all other attacks, leave screech & Growl on, and you’ll be hard pressed to pull aggro from your pet.

Oh, and a quick aside. Getting a red lynx as an Alliance really pissed the Hoardies off. They like to think that pet is “exclusive” to the hoarde side. Even running around with my lynx got me lots of rude gestures from passing hoardies. So it’s useful for tweaking people off (And as I don’t PvP, I just waved when they /rude me.
)

I LOVE THE ZERG-Look-alike PET!!!! RAVAGERS RULE! THANKS A MIL MAN!
Thanks!
I actually did it. Took me around an hour to run to Auberdine, but the pet is worth it.
I ran the whole way in spirit form, then spirit rezzed near the Blood Watch.

Happy to help, Toast ^_^
Hrm, speaking of ravagers, I have heard (via the marvellous, marvellous Petipia site) that the Rip-blade Ravager (lvl 63, B.E.M) changes to a different colour everytime you summon him. Anyone tried this?
And btw my hunter class lead has a ravager pet. Named Orgasmatron. *gigglegiggle*
@Oriniwen: I have heard that as well, but can’t confirm it myself. I lol’ed at your pet’s name.
the level 10-12 ravagers (bloodmyst ratchling) are not tamed
@Simas: Do you mean that those ravagers are not tamable? If so, that’s incorrect. The orange ravager I have tamed in my screenshots is one of the level 10 to 12 ones.
I sure as heck hope this works, going to attempt it on my lv33 troll now.
This is a great source of info.
I have a lvl 22 troll hunter that I play on the Andorhal server. With the help of a lvl 46 tauren warrior, I was able to get to azuremyst isle and obtain an orange and black ravager.
It was an experience running through Auberdine on a pvp server. Every allie and their mother was taking cheap shots. The first time I got on the boat some human mage came back to kill me. It takes alot of skill to kill a naked, unarmed troll. But after dying about 10 to 15 times, I made my way to the boat and to my goal.
For all the allies in Auberdine 08JAN09 around 1630, all your efforts were in vain (especially you Reckluss). Did any of you ever figure out what a naked troll wanted anyway?
Now you need to write a guide for horde toons to obtain Sewer Beast in Stormwind. Hope to see you there, Reckluss.
Zomg this so works, I now have one of the coolest pets on the game
Ty so much
btw i <3 cheese
I did this today and it was pretty easy. It was much harder getting my moth tho. P.s. I did this at lvl 23.
Good guide, i looked for a while for the #2 pets, are they by the “Pod” that is just south of the little camp? I went up north and grabbed a low level, which was probably good since it couldn’t stun and interrupt taming. I did this as a lvl 17 and died a few times on the dock, be careful because some guards are stealthed. If you run on the boat they can’t follow you. There are pets that you can pick up and dismiss (lvl 15 and up crabs) to mitigate aggro.
Hi Sern - The higher level ravagers on Bloodmyst are in the mountains past Nazzivian. Pretty much right where I’ve got the map marked with the 2. If you’re in the right spot they should be very easy to find.
I actually did this tonight on my freshly dinged level 10 Orc hunter lol. I managed to make it through Ashenvale without aggroing any mobs (track beast ftw), and was ganked only once.
Auberdine was a different story. It took 8 deaths until I was able to make it onto the boat. I aggroed some NPCs on Azuremyst and died once more, but eventually I made it and now have a nice new ravager pet! It was definitely worth it.
