The Lich King Cometh… Someday
I’m putting this in the News category only because I don’t want to create a “Wild, Unfounded Speculation” category for just one post.
Cameron had an interesting post on whether Blizzard is planning on releasing the WotLK expansion sooner rather than later. Among the changes coming in Patch 2.4 is news that Primal Nethers and Nether Vortices are now going to be purchasable with Badges of Justice, and will both be BoE. In other words, the best gear in the game is now available to casuals, albeit highly expensive. The last time Blizzard did that was in Patch 2.0, when they made the high-level PvP gear available to the masses, and Burning Crusade came out just a few months later.
Is Blizzard going to repeat the pattern and release WotLK in just a few months? Honestly, I doubt it. I’d be rather surprised to see Blizzard release WotLK without a public beta. They don’t even release patches without public betas, so an entire expansion without one would be a huge step out of character for them. Plus, the hype machine hasn’t really had a chance to get fully rolling yet, and I don’t think Blizzard will let that opportunity slip by.
However, I did come across this forum thread in which Drysc hints that he may already be looking ahead to WotLK himself. Responding to a complaint about how much the Nethers and Vortices are going to cost, he said:
They’re expensive because they’re progression-aiding items, even for some very involved players or their alts. For the solo or small group player, yes, they’re going to take a while. And if they want they can invest in them and get some really bad ass items. That isn’t the higher end style of player that will want those items though, which the prices reflect.
Personally I’m just glad I can grab a few really awesome items to toss on my alts to help them level in Wrath.
Emphasis mine.
Interesting, no?
