Whenever I get a new piece of gear with sockets, the first thing I always wonder about is what gems I’m going to put into it. I never can remember what stats go with what color, so I wrote up this handy little guide to be able to see at a glance what stats are available with which color gems.
Red
Strength
Attack Power
Agility
Parry
Dodge
Spell Damage
Heal
Blue
Stamina
MP5 (Mana per 5 seconds)
Spirit
Spell Penetration
Yellow
Spell Crit
Spell Hit
Intellect
Defense
Resilience
Hit
Crit
Purple - Red or Blue socket
Purple Gems combine stats from the Red and Blue categories. For example, Stamina and Attack Power, and Stamina and Spell Damage.
Green - Yellow or Blue Socket
Green Gems combine stats from the Yellow and Blue Categories. For example, Intellect and MP5, and Stamina and Defense.
Orange - Red or Yellow Socket
Orange Gems combine stats from the Red and Yellow categories. For example, Healing and Intellect, and Hit and Agility.

I power up wowwiki when I’m in need of gems or enchantments. Their page for gems is laid out great and the enchants are broken down by slot, and show the mats needed. But I have a laptop next to the desktop I play on, so alt-tabbing back and forth isn’t a problem.
/BIG OL SMOOCH /HUGS I have been looking for something like this! Received my first piece of armor with all these holes in it waiting to be fixed up (for gems).
