Shop Smart, Shop Pet… Smart Achievement

I mentioned a while back that one of my WotLK goals was to get the 50 mini-pet Achievement (and the awesome skunk pet that comes with it!). I realized a few days ago how close I’m getting to the 50 mark, so I decided to start looking for the last few pets that I need.

I’ve always used WarcraftPets.com to look through the different pets and find new ones that I can get, but they recently started a great new function that lets you track your pet collection and find new ones more easily. If you are interested in getting the 50 (or 75) mini-pet Achievement, I highly recommend using this tool to help you keep track of everything.

They’re Mine, All Mine!

Right now, I’m at 44 pets, so I need 6 more for the Achievement. Here’s my collection so far, broken down into categories as to how they are obtained. If you’re looking to start your own collection, a lot of these can be obtained fairly easily.

Sorting Through The Rest

According to Warcraft Pets, there are currently 111 mini-pets in game, counting all sources (drops, quests, vendors, TCG loot, etc), but there are a bunch of pets that I either can’t (e.g., one-time event) or won’t (e.g., TCG loot) obtain. After throwing out all of those, there are a total of 84 pets that I can get, and I have 44 of them so far. So I’ve got 40 pets remaining to try and get my hands on.

Moving Forward

Of those 40 pets, not all are good choices for obtaining immediately-ish. The seasonal pets obviously have to wait until their season comes around, and two of the three Achievement pets are rewards for getting pets, so I’ll have to wait to get them. The Kirin Tor Familiar, though, might be a good option, if a bit difficult to get.

The Lifelike Toad is definitely a great option. The recipe is a world drop, so it’s a bit difficult to get, but the mats aren’t bad at all and I’m sure I can find someone to make it easily. So there’s one of the 6.

It’s looking like anything else going to be a grind of some sort, whether it be rep or mobs. I think I’ll probably go for one or two of the dragon whelplings, because I’ve always admired them ever since I started playing WoW, but never had the money to buy one or the desire to grind the drop until now.

I think I’ll go with this:

Lifelike Toad
Pengu
2 of the dragon whelplings
2 of the Oracle-Revered pets

And that’ll be 50!

  1. I haven’t tried grinding for the whelps in awhile, but expect to spend several days (bare minimum) trying to acquire them - or spending several thousand gold to buy them. The whelps are 1/1000 drops, I believe.

If you’re doing this on a Hordie, you can try and farm the black tabby - the cat drops best off the Dalaran Spellscribes at about a 20% or so drop rate.

  2. I would go after the Black Tabby, but the mob that it drops from is a rare spawn itself, and then it only has a 20% chance of dropping from it. I think I’d rather go after one of the whelplings where I can at least be killing things on a constant basis.

Edit: You know, after thinking about this, the Black Tabby may not be a bad idea. I could just park an alt at the spot where the Spellscribe spawns. I might do that too.

  3. Cobra Hatchling - Chance to get it at Revered with The Oracles
Tickbird Hatchling - Chance to get it at Revered with The Oracles
White Tickbird Hatchling - Chance to get it at Revered with The Oracles

While these hatchlings are all earned through rep grinding, and hatching an egg, you can frequently find the Cobra and Tickbirds in the AH, as people will get multiples of them while attempting for the the mount that comes from the same egg. I picked up all 3 of those for about 10GP each, although I have seen them listed as high as 300GP each.

  4. That’s a good point, Adam. The pet items are BoU instead of BoP so people can put them into the AH. I don’t think I’ve seen any for sale on my server, but it’s definitely something to keep in mind.

  5. A very sorround sound blog here… aaah what I meant there was you keep a good balance.. :).. I for one had a small dog.. Not of a particular breed just a street dog who I used to feed ocassionally…Turned out she would go nuts on anybody who tried to approach me.. Geesh!
